At Gartconner Primary School, children’s rights are at the heart of everything we do. We are incredibly proud to have achieved Gold Rights Respecting Schools Accreditation from UNICEF in session 2025–2026. This recognition reflects our whole-school commitment to ensuring that children’s rights are fully embedded across our ethos, learning and relationships.

Our journey has been shaped by the voices of our pupils. Each year, class charters are co-constructed with children, creating a shared language of rights, values and responsibilities across the school. This ensures that every child understands their rights and feels empowered to uphold the rights of others.

A key strength of our work is our dedicated UNCRC Steering Group, made up of motivated and thoughtful pupils who lead meaningful change within our school. Their work has had a significant and positive impact, including:

  • Promoting a free, healthy fruit stall available all year round to help tackle the cost of the school day

  • Organising and raising awareness of our pre-loved uniform bank

  • Influencing and shaping school policy to better reflect pupil voice and rights

We also work closely with our Inclusion Group, supporting the promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion across our school community. Together, they help ensure that every child feels valued, respected and included.

Embedding children’s rights at Gartconner has been an ongoing and enriching journey. We remain committed to keeping pupils and their voices at the forefront of all we do, and we continue to learn, reflect and grow alongside our children.
