Outdoor Play and Learning

At Gartconner Primary School, we believe that spending time outdoors is an essential part of children's learning, health and wellbeing. Outdoor play provides valuable opportunities for pupils to be physically active, connect with nature and develop the social, emotional and communication skills that help them thrive both in and beyond school.

Through outdoor play and learning, children learn to collaborate, solve problems, manage risks, build resilience and develop positive relationships with others. These experiences support confidence, independence and wellbeing while encouraging children to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

To maximise these benefits, we offer an extended lunchtime three times per week during Terms 1 and 3, allowing pupils additional time to play, explore and engage with their peers outdoors. Our staff use this valuable time to support children in developing the critical life skills that are nurtured through play, including teamwork, communication, creativity and self-regulation.

We aim to get children outdoors as much as possible throughout the school day and across the curriculum. As Scottish weather can be unpredictable, we ask that all children come to school prepared for the changing conditions with suitable outdoor clothing and footwear whenever possible.

By embracing outdoor play and learning, we provide meaningful opportunities for our pupils to grow, connect and flourish in a rich learning environment beyond the classroom walls.

Outdoor Play Charter

Our Rights Respecting Steering group worked together to create a whole school Charter. This is proudly displayed in our hall and referred to throughout the year.
